The block

You couldn’t be left
to yourself, could you: couldn’t
leave yourself alone.

After all those years
as a father, all the years
you weren’t family.

Turning away from
the special room, turning back
to how you left it.

They still remind you
of the children, the children
you weren’t meant to have.
